Accessing the UK Censuses Online

If you are beginning to search for your UK ancestors, you might like to know that you can do it in the comfort of your own home, IF you are connected to the internet. This is where you can find them:
1841 - Available on Ancestry.uk, also on CDs and at the Origins and The Genealogist sites.
1851 - Available on Ancestry.uk and on CD
1861 - Available on 1837online, Ancestry.uk and on CD
1871 - Available on Ancestry.uk and on CD
1881 - Available for free on Family Search also Ancestry.uk
1891 - As yet only part of 1891 available on 1837 online, also Ancestry.uk
1901 - Available on Ancestry.uk.
Also free at the National Archives site.
Plus there\'s the FreeCEN project as well.
Note that other databases, eg parish records, civil registration indexes, wills, etc are also available at some of the ‘pay to use’ sites. Some LDS libraries and larger genealogical societies subscribe to one or more of these subscription sites and possibly your local public library subscribes as well, so check with them. Note also that some dedicated volunteers have transcribed portions of County censuses and made these available free on the internet. Try Googling with the name of the county plus census. Finally, don’t forget the 1881 Census (both on fiche and on our computers), is freely available for searching at our library.
